COURSE DESCRIPTION 

Addresses policy and management issues surrounding information systems in today’s enterprises: strategic use, organizational impact, project management, human resource issues, and other topics germane to understanding management information systems.

COURSE OBJECTIVES 

This course focuses on the effect of technology on the business enterprise and the use of IT for competitive advantage. By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the roles played by information technology in modern businesses, and define various technological architectures on which information systems are built.
  2. Define and analyze typical information systems and identify how they meet the needs of the firm to deliver operational excellence and competitive advantage.
  3. Understand and discuss the importance and business value of securing information systems
  4. Define the relationships between the non-MIS manager and the MIS function, and identify the role of the non-MIS manager in areas such as MIS strategic planning, end-user liaison support, customer-facing systems, and decision support systems.
  5. Discuss critical ethical and social issues in information systems.
  6. Understand and develop business process models.

GRADING

Grades will be administered in accordance with the College of Business and University policies and practices.  Letter grades will be earned based on a total number of points attained, according to the following schedule:

Assignments and Expectations:

Each student is expected to submit all assignments per the assignment instructions and schedule outlined in this Course Syllabus.  Except for the team project, student assignments must reflect each student's work and original contribution.  All assignments submitted for grading must be in APA Format.  Feel free to use the general guidelines for APA and the sources provided below. 

Communication Medium:

The primary method of communication will be through the class electronic mail (e-mail) on Florida Tech’s learning management system, CANVAS.  It is your responsibility to stay current with all postings to the class Web site on CANVAS.

Drops and Withdrawals

Please be aware that, should you choose to drop or withdraw from this course, the date on which you notify the university of your decision will determine the amount of tuition refund you receive. Incomplete (I) Grade Policy:

A grade of incomplete is only granted in unusual and documented circumstances.  Under no circumstance will an Incomplete be granted if the student is failing the course at the time the Incomplete is requested.  A grade of Incomplete will not be given in instances where students were unable to complete the course work due to personal circumstances. Course Attendance and Absences:

Students are expected to attend all class sessions of the course.  In the case of unavoidable absence, the student must contact the instructor.  The student may be subject to appropriate academic penalty for incomplete or unacceptable makeup work, or for excessive or unexcused absences.

Course Contact Hours:

The faculty member is expected to hold each of the scheduled classes or make up any classes that are missed.  Any exception to this must be approved by the Academic Unit Head/ Site Director. Failure to meet the full complement of hours may be construed as a breach of contract and may also endanger the University’s accreditation.
